Grain runs differently through every culm, and a woven edge closes where the maker's hand decides it should. Variation is not a defect in these objects — it is the record of how they were made.
Our position
These are not objects made to look sustainable on a shelf. A tray gets carried, a comb gets used every morning, a mug goes into a bag and comes back out again. We design for the second year of ownership, not the first week.

Our story
Achila began with one culm of bamboo, a hand saw and a question: how much of everyday life could be made from a grass that grows back in five years?
Today a group of makers in Assam cut, split, steam, weave and oil that same material into mugs, canisters, boxes, combs, brushes and kitchen tools. Nothing is pressed from board, nothing is veneered to look like something else. The object you hold is the material it is made of.
Philosophy
Most manufacturing works to erase the evidence of making: sand the seam flat, spray the grain out, print a texture back on. We work the other way. A node stays where it grew, a weave closes where the maker's hand decided, and the grain runs where the culm sent it. Two objects from the same batch are cousins, not copies.

The people
Weavers, turners and finishers who learned the craft from the people they now work beside. Paid per piece completed rather than per hour, so nothing is rushed at the last stage.
